I noticed something about this on one of the crew bulletin board sites a few weeks ago. This is the bulletin one of the crew members on the board posted.

Bulletin 08-39
March 20, 2008

Subject: Brewing Pre-Departure Coffee on 737-300 and 737-500 A/C Policy

With fuel prices at historic highs we continue to explore fuel saving opportunities in our operation. B737 classic aircraft require APU use to make coffee at the gate. Financial, operational and customer service analysis indicates that a substantial fuel savings (nearly $1 million annually) may be gained by not operating the APU on B737 aircraft for the sole purpose of making coffee. Effective April 1, 2008, Inflight and Flight Operations will implement the following procedures on B737 300 and 500 aircraft:

1. The APU will not be turned on for exclusive use to provide pressure for the coffee makers for pre-departure on the 737 Classics.
2. If the APU has been turned on for other reasons, (cabin temperature considerations) crews are to provide hot coffee for the pre-departure service.
3. Pre-departure service on other fleet types is not affected by this procedure and we will continue to provide pre-departure hot coffee since the APU is not required for providing pressure for the coffee makers.

The potential inconsistency noticed by our customers in comparison to the other fleet types is expected to be minimal.

For those flights that will not have use of coffee makers for morning departures, suggest orange, apple, tomato or cranberry juice for a pre-departure beverage and let our customers know that a fresh pot of coffee will be available after take off.

Please offer the best possible service to our customers while trying to gain this potential fuel savings.
