We had a truly exceptional dine Wednesday (Jan 23 2008) dine at
Bayleaf restaurant in Napa, California. We booked the previous day using OpenTable.com (1,000 points for booking a 6:00 PM table.)
On Wednesday, we were called by the owner, who merely inquired if we were intending to honor our booking. Strange, but... I replied affirmatively, as we were driving down to Napa from Sacramento and had booked a hotel en route to another location.
At 5:55 PM we arrived at the restaurant - completely empty parking lot, but all the lights were on. We entered, and were greeted warmly and noted the bar and restaurant were totally devoid of diners. Strange! But we were seated, we ordered (we were brought an amuse bouche, warm Moroccan flat bread, the salads we had ordered (and a nice Spanish wine,) during which time I heard the phone being answered several times and people being told the restaurant was closed due to an outside catering.
Our mains came (a nice paella with lobster, very lightly spiced,) and we inquired. It turns out the restaurant was indeed closed for the night due to an outside event, but owner Mounir Fahmy made sure several staffers stayed to keep the restaurant open and serve us. We were welcomed and served graciously, the food (as usual) was good and largely excellently done, and we were amazed with this level of customer service - we are not frequent diners and are unknown here AFAIK, yet
they kept the restaurant open for the two of us.
