For $5, Continental should be able to offer a lot better wine. I haven't flown NW TATL in quite a while but I've heard they offer wine free with their meals.

It seems that you are mixing the BF wine service (the Bordeaux) with the Y wine service (Fisheye).
And yes, the accountants are squeezing the bottom line. CO offers free "meals at mealtimes" and NW offers one TATL free drink (mostly b/c of their KL relationship). That's just the way it is.
