Alaska waives all change fees for its highest level elites. Southwest does it for everyone. On both airlines, the passenger still must pay any applicable difference in fare. This provides an incentive to upfare when it would be beneficial but is not absolutely necessary. As pointed out by
CO 1E, it reduces certain fee revenue. Not sure those airlines' business decisions are appropriate here, but I wouldn't call them "beyond stupid."
