Actually, it doesn't "cost" you anything to use the PMU on the domestic portion of an international itinerary. For example, if you're traveling CMH-ATL-CDG, you can apply one PMU to the entire trip over. Of course, you may find that V clears before G does, but it never hurts to be on both lists!
