Trip Report: The Westin Auckland, Lighter Quay

Walking in on the 2nd day of a new hotel is always a risk and I appreciate that when I make this report.

If you call the global 800 number asking for an address or number to this property...forget it. Four phone calls, three hangups and a supervisor later I was able to get the information (I lost the sheet with the address). Apparently Westin and Auckland are tough to search!

Firstly, the hotel is gorgeous. You walk in and you are greeting with a dark well appointed lobby. The middle is hollowed out with a pool that is supposed to have stones and statues from the south (not there yet).

The check in is too the left, no SPG Gold/Plat line, but with only 175 rooms it probably isn't necessary.

Things were still really under construction when we got there.

The rooms themselves are very nice, some are inward looking into that little pool, some overlook the quay, me unfortunately got a bus terminal. A little frustrating considering the hotel was mostly empty and there were two SPG Golds checking in (myself and my father).

I cannot report on the lounge, it isn't finished yet.

The room was very nice, a full amenity kit is provided as well as heavenly bath and shower (the latter I could have spent all day in). We were missing a clock radio and a table for it to go on (the phone was on the floor), but again, new hotel I take it with a grain of salt.

The room also came with a small wet bar and LCD tv.

The only thing that urked me about the room and I know it is the 'european hotel style' but for $300 a night, I would have expected two double beds rather than two single beds. Maybe I'm spoiled by North American hotels in that respect but you walk into this brand new room and you have to laugh to see these beds this way.

One thing that is very lacking is training. The restaurant (standard overpriced SPG restaurant) was $30 NZD for a hot breakfast. The staff was not well trained and had to look over the menu with us. Were slow to react to requests about more coffee, etc. Very annoying when you are looking for a good overpriced breakfast.

The piss off was one of the concierges who took it upon himself to hear, but not listen.

First request, Airport Shuttle at 7pm the following day (we just got in when we made this report) Phone rings at 7am to tell us the shuttle is here, and trust me...we told him 7pm. Second request, high end steakhouse in Auckland. We were sent to Angus, a salad bar / pick your own meat and give it to the chef kind of restaurant. It wasn't bad meat, but not what we had requested.

This is my first time staying in a new hotel, and I'm assuming these 'bugs' are just early growing pains which are common. (I didn't get a kick of the phone on the floor though).

If the price became more reasonable (I still think $300 for a hotel room is silly, but the client didn't mind paying ) I would book there again. The surrounding area is very nice. Right on the water, close to a bunch of restaurants.

However apparently a five minute walk in Auckland is really 15. Assuming it isn't raining
