Any other tips, tricks, must-see/do while at SHV are also much appreciated.
As a former resident of SHV, I offer the following:

Best place to wait for your ride on arrival: Well, if you're outside, your ride can't miss you. It's not a big place. Not really any interesting place to wait inside.

Best place to wait for your outbound flight: The restaurant has been mentioned. I'd suggest going to your gate and catching up on some reading. Not too much excitement at SHV. If you're lucky you'll see an actual RJ taking off or landing.

Things to do in the SHV area: The casinos have been mentioned. Can't say that's really my thing, but I suppose they're as good a place as any to blow a few dollars. If you want to nurse a Guiness try The Noble Savage downtown. They have excellent coffee as well.

Or, buy a couple of pounds of crawfish from a roadside stand and head out along the Red River somewhere and soak up some sun. Man, I could go for some of that right now.
