I rent cars all the time and I have never paid attention to any pre-auth on my card, but then again I have never had this situation before.
Damn being lazy got me again.
It's possible - depends on how the rental company does the pre-auth, and whether your credit card issuer is more interested in keeping you under your limit or generating over-limit fees.
