They lose out multiple times.
1. The customers are peeved about the "taxes and charges".
2. They get no commission on what should be part of the base fare.
3. Their margins keep getting squeezed.
Playing devil's advocate here, and thinking longer term: Number 2 is easy for the airlines to fix.
