The web page pointed out by skyflyer seems pretty clear on this issue. But it is still interesting that neither the email that I received, nor the web page that it pointed me to, include this disclaimer.
Also, if that interpretation is correct, I still would go for scenario #3, because I've been a subscriber for the 6 months that they originally asked for.
