Before there was a "FIRST CLASS RESTRICTED" option on AA.com, choosing Economy unrestricted was the only way to pick up on the YUP fares (as they were a few years ago).
It's a technicality, that would not normally come into play, unless there is an irregular operations situation and the PAX requests to be accommodated in F cabin on another carrier, in which case UA would be in a position to argue that the PAX has purchased an economy fare ...
