I did this because it was an open jaw lax-lhr-phx which cannot be mfu'd online. The agent said that since this was a change to an already issued ticket the change fee would apply. When I get this sort of thing from United customer "service" (especially when I get India) I just hang up and call again until I get somebody who actually knows what they're talking about.
