Not only do they use tip offs, they also profile travellers. I don't normally get picked out (<1% over many years), but the one time I did a 6 day itinerary to Aruba, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and included Amsterdam for good measure (all on legit business
) I did get picked out without hesitation from customs.
