"It's to try to work through this window of soft demand," said Delta spokesman John Kennedy, adding that the airline doesn't have a goal for how many employees it hopes will sign up for leaves.

Delta told employees that it will continue paying for its portion of insurance coverage, and employees will keep their flight privileges during the leaves, which begin April 1. Delta said employees will have until March 25 to request a leave.
