Prices and quality can vary for franchised properties, but I have had good luck with HI Express, Hampton, Fairfield, Marriott Courtyard, and the Choice brands (Comfort, Sleep, etc.) I usually avoid Motel 6, Super 8, and Red Roof unless I am desperate. Don't overlook some of older, independent, "motor hotels" that can sometimes be found in smaller towns, but usually not by the interstates.
Also when in doubt, ask to see the room first.
