I have had good luck upgrading international Y with miles (before and after the $250 policy). You end up on the waitlist a lot but it seems to clear.
Based out of ORD as a gold, I have had a good amount of domestic upgrades clear w/ stickers. As a Platinum it is much better, not to mention all of the other benefits.
