I just looked in the "Terms and Conditions" for Flying Blue. It contains the following sentence:

1.2.9 After a period of 36 months of no accrual of Level Miles by a Member, the Company reserves the right to cancel the Award Miles. After a period of 36 months of no accrual of Award Miles by a Member, the Company reserves the right to unilaterally terminate the membership

I also found the following entry in the KLM online FAQ:

"Do Award Miles expire?

If you do not fly with a SkyTeam partner for a period of 3 consecutive years then your Award Miles will expire."


That would seem to imply that you have to make a flight once every 36 months, and that mileage accrual from hotels, AmEx, etc. is not good enough. That is actually worse than most FF programs, which allow you to keep the miles active by having any transaction once every 36 months...
