I have one of the chokers. My husband purchased it in Liberty House on Oahu about 7 or 8 years ago. I don't think he paid more than $150 for it, however, I have seen them for far more money. This leads me to believe it's probably a lower grade shell.

I second going to a museum shop. We've purchased some really nice stuff at the Bishop Museum and are certain it's authentic.
