Continental subscribes to a service that provides on-call medical advice and provides liability coverage when advice is followed.

I have only been called on twice to lend medical assistance. Once it was mid-flight SFO-IAH and talked with the doc on call. It was an interested experience to be doing that in the cockpit. The other time was on final so there was no time to talk with them, but the paramedics did meet the plane at the gate.
