We were on the ground sitting in SLC waiting to take off to head out to PHX around 7am Saturday morning. One of the ground ops people got on the plane to say that there was an unexpected delay and therefore boarding was halted, and passengers had the option of returning to the terminal if they wished.

A few minutes later the captain got on the PA and advised us that there was an "Evacuation" of the PHX tower due to an "unknown situation" and they had put a full groundstop on PHX. He said that it was unknown how long this would last. A FA mentioned something about some flights being diverted to TUS (Is this the normal emergency diversion point for PHX?).

Anyway, whatever the problem was it was apparently solved quickly as 20 minutes later they announced the problem was abated and the flight could take off again. We finally arrived only a couple minutes late, due to the "fudge" factor added on to flight time by the schedule.

PHX appeared normal that day. Anybody know what was the cause of this problem?
