A couple of additional notes:
(1) A free night award can be upgraded at booking with additional points at many properties. It isn't an option everywhere.
(2) A paid reservation cannot be upgraded with points more than 5 days before checkin.

more than five days - does it mean at time of booking and up to 5 days before, or does it mean five days or less before the stay?
