Even if I take the earliest morning flight out around 8am, I'm not going to get much sleep the night before either. With the 1-hour time difference, I arrive just after lunch, For Tokyo, I pretty much lose most of the day by the time I reach the city from Narita. So I can sympthasize why the short red-eyes are so popular to maximize the time in Japan.
I wonder if a 6am HKG departure would be the best or worst of both worlds. Best because you still sleep in your bed the "night" before, have some time on the flight to nap, and get to Tokyo in time for a late lunch. Worst because you're not getting a full night of sleep and at best have half a day in Tokyo versus the full day off the redeye.
