I agree that some passengers find it awkward. I disagree with the rest. I'm only PM, and I rarely pass thru ATL, so maybe that's the difference.

I don't think stroking egos has anything to do with it. I've never felt that it was disingenuous, nor forced. IMO, the tone feels appreciative. I have a difficult name to pronounce and it's amusing to watch their eyes get big, but most employees seem to genuinely try to get it right. Also, there's rarely a supervisor in earshot, so I think if the employee didn't want to say it, they wouldn't. Nobody would be any the wiser.
