I can't help you as far as travel tools go, but here is a comment that may assist in your search for award flights from Europe to the US. The $700+ fees that you mention in your post are not due to flying through LHR, bur rather to BA's surcharges on the transatlantic segment of your trip. AA itself has transatlantic flights from LHR and does not impose surcharges; BA would impose a surcharge on a connecting flight from the European continent to LHR, but those fees are comparatively modest.
