I just stayed here for four days…given the lack of information I figured I’d write about my stay.

I flew into SAP (which is a horror show as far as immigration) and then spent two nights in San Pedro Sula first. I’d recommend anyone coming to Honduras spending as little time as possible in San Pedro Sula. I felt perfectly safe, just not much to do and the countryside is far nicer.

Before arrival I contacted the hotel several times with questions. They struggled to reply via email but were excellent at replying via WhatsApp.

I arranged for a transfer from the hotel in San PEdro Sula to Indura and back to the airport. Originally they quoted me $138 each way but when I inquired about a diamond discount they said $260 round trip. I should say that Uber shows it as about $65 each way, but I wouldn’t depend on that as it always showed limited availability and I’d guess no driver really takes the job. The transfer from San Pedro Sula to the hotel was about 1h45m. The driver was good and the ride was pleasant. The return to the airport (at 5AM) was about 1.5 hours. The driver wasn’t quite as aggressive, but it was fine.

I arrived at the hotel at 12:45 and had no trouble checking in early. I was given a black bracelet which I was told to identify myself as a diamond member of Hilton…I’m not quite sure why! The hotel was 100% booked the first time I was there connected with some major conference. I was upgraded from the basic nature view deluxe suite to a 1 bedroom master suite with private (but shared) pool. This was really a condo which isn’t even available on the website. The unit was beautiful and large, with a full kitchen setup. I asked to switch though as it was a nature view and I preferred ocean. Because the hotel was 100% sold out I stayed in this unit for one night before switching to an ocean front deluxe junior suite. This unit is really just a hotel room with a small sitting area, but a large balcony with a great view of the ocean. As a single person, I’d rather less space and a better view, but certainly if I had a family the initial upgrade would have been better. I don’t quite get what the master suite I was in the first night was, as it is not listed as an option on the website and I have no idea how someone would reserve it.

The first morning I was there the restaurant was closed for breakfast because of the conference so they told me to order anything and they’d deliver to my room. While I’d prefer a buffet to see the items, this was an acceptable alternative and I ordered several dishes without an issue. The rest of my stay they had a buffet, which was good, but not great. I thought the food was high quality but not tons of options. On the last day they asked me what I wanted for breakfast and had it ready for my 5AM departure.

The hotel felt empty throughout my stay. The pools (there are three connected pools) are beautiful…while not big they definitely were not crowded. I also used the fitness center which was very nice in a nature setting. My only critique is that they had a single elliptical and treadmill, so if someone else was using it you had no option.

The town of Tela is about 6 miles. The hotel told me they could arrange a taxi there for $20 each way. I ended up running there one day…it was 6 miles to the town of Tela, but the part with restaurants, bakeries, etc. was more like 8 miles. I took a taxi back. First I tried Uber which said it would be about $5, but no driver appeared, so got a taxi. The first driver asked for 300 lipuna ($12) so I passed and the second said 200 ($8) which I accepted. Taxis were plentiful in downtown Tela. I also went to the nearest village one day of Tornabe. Not much there but an easy walk from the hotel (note that Google maps directions take you through the woods). I’d say at no point did I feel unsafe. People when I was out running (or later biking) waved and said hello and smiled, but in no way made me feel uncomfortable

One afternoon I asked about getting a bike and the hotel told me it was $17.50 for 2 hours. When I inquired about a diamond discount they said it was free! I did walk to the beach one day too. It was a red flag day so no one was in the water, but the chairs were out and it is a nice setting with a sand beach. The hotel also had a children’s zone (but it was closed the whole time I was there) a climbing space and outdoor play space.

Also the service at the hotel was excellent. They had tons of people working and taking care of the grounds. The front desk staff spoke perfect English and was very helpful, kind and understanding. The other staff spoke some English, but that’s fine. While they struggled to respond to email, they were excellent at replying to WhatsApp, not only before I arrived but also while there.

Overall I thought very highly of the hotel. The setting is beautiful and as it is in a national park and bird sanctuary there are cool birds everywhere, which made swimming enjoyable as you got to watch the birds. For the price paid I think it is a steal…it is in an off the beaten path part of Honduras (which itself is off the beaten path) and so you got to experience a unique part of Honduras while getting first class amenities. I’d far prefer this to the islands which lack the countries personality. The staff went out of their way to make my experience there awesome.
