Thanks for confirming, that's what I thought. She didn't give me the usual wrong reasons/explanations, and was so confident in asserting this (can't add one partner to another partner in a ticketed reservation) that it made me second-guess myself. I'll keep calling and report back on what I find.
The positioning flights on AS that I wanted are now gone, so I have to wait for availability to hopefully open back up so I can try again. Fingers crossed.
DP: I had success adding an AA positioning flight previously by contacting AA via Twitter, so went through the same contact method to change my positioning flight to an AS flight. It was surprisingly smooth and they responded within 10 min after my initial DM, and the entire conversation was done within 30 min. I changed my positioning flight to AS with a different fare class (downgraded to Coach) and had no issues. The only thing up in the air is that the status of my reservation is now "on-request" - probably because it's with a partner carrier rather than AA for the positioning flight. But I checked that my JL flight is still ticketed, and I was also able to choose a seat for my AS flight. I should receive a "ticketed" status within 24-48 hours. Will update this thread when I receive that confirmation.
Edit: Received the ticketed email confirmation 4.5 hours later!
