One way or another you learned that your fare didn't come with free seat selection. I'm not entirely sure what other intentions there were to confirm.

The sheer entitlement here is astounding. You, by your own admission, purchased tickets while being completely oblivious to the terms. Other people in that cabin paid good money to be there, and from the sound of it many of them have already chosen their seats by virtue of having the right fare type, FFP status, or paying outright.
