I was not looking for a seat selection per-se when I contacted Qatar (any seat would be fine), just confirmation that this would be the best intention or something to this effect. It was then I was told of the costs to select if I wanted to sit with my family who are all on the same ticket. My bad for assuming that seating families together would at least be attempted on a premium product and misreading the Airlines website "Standard Seat (selection) is complimentary for most fare types." A reassuring note—until you subsequently learn that this only applies to Economy. Was never asking something for nothing, but in IMHO nothing premium about a family being scattered across the cabin like lost luggage. From these helpful replies I guess its a case of "it is what it is" I suppose, and at the end of the day I should at have read the small print when spending $20K+. And yes, this is a lot of money for me at least. Thanks for your answers.
This is not small print. When you book a ticket, QR offers you several choices of fares. It clearly list what each fare entails. You have to make a choice between those fares, their costs and their benefits.
