Maybe the issue is how do they know you are the parent/guardian of the child in question without some sort of proof or ID.
That would be equally true if I drove to Belfast and got a domestic flight though. I don’t dispute the rule makes sense, but they should mention it on their website or conditions of carriage, and not let you on in London without the right documents.
