Have had that happen twice but at the last minute. The first time my KLM flight was cancelled & they put me on an AI flight. The next time my AF flight was delayed & I was going to miss my connection so they put me on a LH flight. In fact, they had no business availability on the LH flight so they put me in First from DEL-MUC & then back in business from MUC-JFK.
But there have also been times when there has been a cancellation a number of months before the flight & they have put me on another KL, AF, AZ or VS flight, even though there was no award space.
