Using the cancel flight link in manage booking to request a refund has got a lot faster. I've cancelled 4 reward flights in the last month. All were dealt with within 24 hours, and the one I cancelled yesterday had been processed with the avios back in my account 41 minutes later.
I've done two recently via this method. The last of which was last week. Took 48 hours for the Avios to be refunded.
I think the general rule is, you should expect them back within 48 hours, even if you don't follow up with a phone call / live chat.
As a comparison, British Airways Avios refunds are almost immediately from my experience.
