In LGW I think the gates are fairly dumb, so should be able to do it at the gate. But the better place will be the BA lounge in LGW.
Can confirm this is the case - was allowed through security at LGW without going to a desk first. In fact, I dont think my documents were 'verified' at all. They certainly werent in the Lounge, and at the gate I got a positive beep and green light from the scanner before the agent glanced at the photo page - no typing or passport scanning.
