Probably because you were looking at the wrong place. Being an experienced traveller, I would think you would know that upgrades originate with the airline whose miles you will be using. So, in this case, United: How to upgrade with UA miles on Star Alliance carriers

Doesn't/didn't AA only allow upgrades on IB and BA?
