Agents don't often know the exceptions to the rule. If you think your bag will be over 50lbs (but still under 70lbs) for domestic travel, the best thing to do is to print out the page on the internet with the exceptions and carry it with you. They can look it up in their system, it just takes longer.

I have never been asked to pay, but several agents had to be reminded that Elites are exempt from the fee.
