Correct me, if I am wrong. I draw this conclusion from a distant memory.

If you are referring to UA or NWA, I think you would be out of luck. I believe UA and NWA don't give you retroactive credits, at least they spelled it out that you would have to join either MP or WP before your trip's completed in order to get the miles when I first enrollled years back. I think AA is on the same boat. But I am not sure if they offer something similar to CO that you can "buy back" miles with nominal fee. I didn't explore that option nor research on it.
