Review for a recent 1-night stay, my feelings are very similar to MikeBOS.

Booking & Check In
Booked direct on hyatt.com at 29k points/night for King, was upgraded to a studio suite on the 20th floor in-app the day of check-in. Check in was straightforward and simple, they recognized Globalist and explained the breakfast situation (1 entree & drink per person, room service was permitted). It was efficient & pleasant.

Hotel & location
The hotel definitely felt like a Thompson. Nice and modern, though clearly going for the mid-century vibe. It’s obvious this was an older converted building, but I think they did a nice job. The lobby was large and welcoming, though a bit light on seating. It was nice you could enter from 56th or 57th. The major subway lines are nearby, and there’s plenty of cabs in this area.

Room
As you’d expect, it’s much nicer than the HPs and HHs in the city, but clearly not the PH. The studio suite was spacious, though I’d prefer a tub over a giant shower. My most important needs were well met. The HVAC was powerful, the room was dead quiet, and the blockout curtains actually work (albeit there’s a lot of manual chains to operate). The bed was the typical firm mattress you find at a Thompson; I prefer something a smidge softer, but it was passable for 1 night. As a small aside, firm beds often hurt my lower back, but I’ve found stretching my hamstrings, quads, and IT bands before bed to solve the issue (wish I had figured that out years ago).

Minor nits include the outlets near the bed being poorly designed (anything larger than a basic plug blocks the light switch), mediocre views, no coffee maker, and for a “suite” it was form over function. There’s no chairs, so room service breakfast comes on a tray that fits on the coffee table near the sofa. Not the end of the world, but again, for $800/night I would’ve been annoyed. Oh yeah, and the included wifi is 5Mbps down and up, that’s…not great.

Service
Our needs were pretty minimal, but we did order room service breakfast which was delivered quickly (under 20 minutes). I do find the 1 entree + 1 drink constraints to be weird given the massive range in entree price.

As I’ve found to be a pattern, there was a small “gratuity” fee on our bill at checkout. It’s $7 so I didn’t bother, but the amount doesn’t make any sense. There seems to be an unspoken tip limit that’s included, or maybe staff are playing a little game to get some extra bucks here and there. In the past when I asked about this, I’ve always had them wipe it out, but always evade explaining how it happens.

Conclusion
I’m glad I tried out this hotel, I don’t regret spending 29k points here, but I doubt I’ll return. If paying cash, there’s plenty of alternatives I’d spend the money on instead. And for points, I’ll save them for nicer Hyatts at off-season rates. I am trying out the Andaz 5th ave later this year, maybe that’ll become my goto Hyatt in the city (I used to stick with the PH, but at 45k points is a bit steep imo).
