Check to see if your reservations have already been split. For instrument upgrades, unless they've changed something recently, that's SOP. (You and your companion likely have different PNRs).
The splitting that would happen for CPU purposes appears to have been changed so that it only occurs if one is actually going to clear, but I don't think they made the same change for instrument-supported upgrades.
The "going way down the list" thing is a defect, but I don't know if it's been fixed yet or not.
Your companion isn't supposed to move when you split.
