Just as another data point perhaps, but also a question. Experienced this a couple of weeks ago on IAH-LHR. Before OLCI we're at #2 and 3 on upgrade list (R fare with a MUA applied). At OLCI #1 gets upgraded and we’re 45 +1 blocked and we become #1 and 2. Then someone probably does the buy-up since one of the seats I was scoping out was gone. At T-6 we both get upgraded but I find out later that our itinerary got split. So I can only surmise that they initially only opened 1 seat for upgrade, then the second one right afterwards?
