There used to be a hack, although must admit it has been a few years, where you purchase the ticket, then elect to purchase additional miles including PQP., and then cancel the ticket (within the 24 hours). It is expensive but if I really needed the spend at the end of the year. It only works for PQPs and not PQFs. As I said it has been a number of years and it was expensive but you got the PQPs without needing to fly, assuming you have met the 4 United segments.
