I learned this trick right here on FT and I use it all the time now. To see the waitlist 3 or 4 days in advance, go to:
https://www.alaskaair.com/flightstatus and type in your flight info. Pick any date and hit continue. When you get to the next screen, delete the date from the URL and type in the date of your flight instead.

I also noticed that AS lists the tail# here sooner than the flight tracking apps do (makes sense since this is probably where they get it from) which is nice for checking wifi and being able to inform my employees and others whether or not I'll be reachable while in the air (to/from Hawaii where only some planes have over-ocean wifi).
