It's not that crazy. US Air used to fly PHL-ACY on little puddlejumpers back in the day. And I don't think it is crazy for a layperson to expect that buying a ticket from American means a plane rather than a bus.
Not to mention, AA itself flew an actual plane on PHL-ABE (55 miles) until 2020. Not hilarious or crazy at all.
