I'd be curious to see the data on this. I'd guess that most people don't think about changing a flight until close in, by which time fares typically have gone up. I'm sure the $200 change fee had a big chilling effect on last minute flight changes, causing airlines to forgo revenue from leisure travelers who might be willing to pay an extra $75 to change a flight but not an extra $275. With business travel still probably a couple years away from returning to pre-pandemic levels, I'd be surprised to see change fees come back any time soon.
