If a UA cancellation then it should have been a refund, not a FFC. And while the rate desk will need to determine the exact value, the refund would have been based on the fare of the return -- not a FFC.
Unfortunately with a lack of travel records this may be hard to resolve.

Not really for a partial flown trip as the value depends on how you plan to modify the original trip. Note that is a problem of partial flown trips and not wholly unflown trips.
