I.e. you were vaccinated abroad. You travel to the UK. You sit near someone on the plane who tests positive. So you may get pinged a few days into your trip and have to self-isolate.
that's changed since early december. the definition of fully vaccinated for close contact self isolation is now aligned with the definition for travel so it shouldn't be as much of an issue now.

EDIT: basically you won't have to self isolate if fully jabbed with most vaccines.
