I ended up finding a more favorable time for an upcoming flight and booked it before canceling the original one. So, I had tickets for two flights that were in the air at the same time. Is that normal for the AS system to allow? I'd think they'd want to prevent that from happening.
I have never seen the system disallow purchasing a conflicting ticket, but I usually get an email later notifying me that I have conflicting itineraries and one of them will be cancelled automatically — unless I contact AS to cancel one of them myself.
AS definitely wants to prevent intended-use bookings.
