Your understanding is incorrect at every airport in the United States, you have to re-clear security once you arrive from an international flight.
The exceptions of course being Canada and Ireland (plus a couple of others) where you preclear us CBP as well as TSA prior to boarding and deplane as if you were coming off of a domestic flight.
