A comfortable surgical mask is normally best. I have been using one every day for years and got so used to it, I would doze off on long flights to Australia. You could suggest putting on a face shield when seated in transit as Dr. Birx recommended, if it makes your spouse feel more protected. Butterfly-style acrylic shields with spectacle frames wear and feel much like heavy glasses.
