I haven't had a problem at a UA lounge in a decade, but had an issue with one of the LH group airlines as recently as mid to late 2019, and probably at least once a year before that.
I've had a similar experience on more than one occasion, also only with the LH group.
I never take my physical card with me when flying in North America, but I never go to Europe without it.
