When you're booking a comp'd room offer, and you pay for an upgraded room, if you're doing it online, click on show rate details, or whatever they're calling it this week. If it shows as $0, $0, $64, you'll only get credit for a single night, although your rate will be eligible for earnings based on room charges.
Not to further complicate or confuse things, but my experience has been the opposite: comp nights booked through mlife.com (with the resort fee charged) have always earned qualifying nights.
