There was a massive difference for PE (200 EUR versus 749 EUR) as well.
Some other reasons might include: you flew in Business in the past; you flew more frequently (even as an explorer) than him.
Lastly, one has to assume there is a dark side to yield mgmt that we are bound not to understand. Both my partner and I are platinum and fly often together on different PNR - we never have a matching price for OLCI upgrades (sometimes 3x/4x more expensive).
